Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on Route 66 in Hazelgreen, Missouri. The road is closed while they build a new bridge across the Gasconade River.

Time

This was my very first shot of the day, a cold and snowing morning about 10 AM with the light just perfect.

Lighting

It was just overcast enough that the natural light provided a beautiful softbox effect everywhere, I want to be in position with the drone to get some good shots of the bridge in this magical lighting and just couldn't pass the perfect view in my screen.

Equipment

I shot this photo on the ground with a DJI Mavic Pro at F2.2 and ISO 100 to really pull out those deep shadows and fine dark details. This is one of my favorite photos, hands down.

Inspiration

I wanted to get some first snowfall pictures of the Historic Hazelgreen Bridge on Route 66 to raise awareness of the risk the bridge is under of being torn down. I had just set up the drone for my first flight of the day and was doing my preflight checklist on the camera. When I saw the effect of the ISO 100 and the soft lighting from the clouds it was one of those rare moments in a photographers life when the picture demands to be taken.

Editing

This was one of those rare moments when the picture practically made itself. In post all that was need was a slight color correction to pull a bit of blue from the snow and a touch of gamma correction to really pull those dark shadows out.

In my camera bag

I always have my Mavic 2 Pro Enterprise or the Mavic Pro in the car or on the bike and ready to fly. The 12MP camera and fine manual control combined with the small easy to pack size have made it my goto camera system for travel.

Feedback

Experiment with your gear and be ready to snap the picture when it presents itself. Don't be so caught up in setting up the perfect planned shot that you miss the magical moments.
