I took this photo on the very last day of a 10 day family adventure/trip while touring through the Canadian Rockies - Canmore, Banff, Jasper, Robson areas. We just finished swimming in the Upper Kananaskis Lake & were heading back to the adventure rig for some zzzzzzzzz's!Time
I remember distinctly the moment this image was taken. It was very close to 8:00 pm mid August, and we were crawling back into our adventure rig "Lenny". As many parents know, a busy day brings out the goofy side of your kids near bedtime. This was that moment!Lighting
The best light is always natural light! Pretty obvious statement but overlooked by so many. I remember we were starting to lose daylight as the sun was threatening to sneak back behind some of the towering mountain peaks. As he entered the vehicle and turned to remove his shoes, the lighting was perfect. Time to grab the camera!Equipment
This shot, as so many of mine are, was not planned and was taken spontaneously. No tripod, no flash.....quick setting adjustment & go. I had my Sony A7RIII with a 24-70 GM lens which is an amazing setup for portraits. I am a huge fan of bokeh in portrait photography....all photography for that matter, so this was taken at f2.8.Inspiration
My kids always inspire me to take more photos! Unless you have kids of your own, this might not resonate too well as "inspiration" for you. But if you do have kids, then it makes perfect sense! As they grow up, you want to freeze every single moment. I think this is my attempt in trying to prevent them from growing up too fast. It doesn't work at all of course....Editing
For a shot like this, post processing is pretty quick & basic. Out of camera was pretty clean, the lighting was pretty ideal and the image has been converted to black & white. Some basic adjustments such as increase contrast, reduce shadows, increase sharpness, some noise reduction, etc. I find the HSL/B&W colour mix panel, & the tone curve to be the key when working with a black & white image.In my camera bag
I recently reduced the amount of gear I pack around. I used to carry a second camera which resulted in a fair bit of redundant gear. My photography pack now typically has the following: Sony A7rIII body, Sony 24-70mm f2.8 lens, Sony 16-35mm f2.8 lens, Sony 70-200mm f4.0 lens, a lightweight tripod good for hiking, a complete Lee filter/grad/ND setup, polarizers & stepper rings for all lenses, a speed light/flash unit, intervalometer, & all the usual suspects (wipes, cleaning rags, spare batteries, dust blower, rain protectors, etc).Feedback
The best images are the ones that happen naturally, and typically unplanned. Of course one would argue that a certain type of image cannot be captured properly without extensive planning and in a controlled environment - I get that. Thats not this type of image! When it comes to portrait photography, the best result comes when the subject is their true self and not aware they being photographed. That is the idea behind portrait photography after all! So if you want to create a similar image to this, then hang that camera on your shoulder at all times, be efficient with your cameras settings so you don't have to ask your subject to be "hold there" or "wait", know how to use the what natural light you have to your advantage, and take more shots than you do right now. You might be surprised at how many great images may result from candid photo fun outside of the lighting studio...
