The Outsiders

This was close to Maejo University, which is famous for launching a crazy amount of lanterns during the Yi Peng festival, and nearly all at the same time (in a few big waves) but it wasn't at the university this year. (maybe it never is, and this is the usual designated area close by, I don't know) I was across the river from the Thudong Lanna Institute, which seemed to be where all the lanterns were coming from. I couldn't get in because it was sold out, but the view from just outside was pretty good.


It was very busy, and the road was filled with people who also didn't get in. (there was a limited number of tickets, and they were expensive to begin with) There were also roped off areas along the river for students, which didn't leave much room for the rest of us.


As I was looking for a decent place to sit (and set up a timelapse) I was lucky to meet a guy named Prawn, who said I could sit on the small patch of grass next to him, and if that wasn't nice enough, he also bought me a garbage bag to sit on. Even more surprising, was that after chatting for a bit, he realized that he knew of my work from one of the many photography websites that have featured my time stacks. Small world!


All of these lanterns were launched before the official countdown, from the eager "outsiders" that didn't want to wait. (and didn't have to because they weren't inside)


This is a composite of made from 34 photos, which I "hand picked" to try and space out the lanterns, so none of them were over lapping. I'll post more that show all of the lanterns from a timelapse. It's pretty intense.
