Rosedale's Chimney Bank Top Ironworks- North Yorkshire Moors, Oct 2018.
Before mining the outcrop of ironstone near Hollins Farm jutted out fro the hillside like a cliff. The cliff was frequently hit by lightening which, according to local superstition, meant that treasure lay beneath! This proved to be a reliable omen-ironstone from this site, was found to be much higher quality from ironstone elsewhere in the dale.
Ironstone was transported from Hollins Mines to Bank Top via an inclined tramway, who's track bed can still be seen. The Stone Arches are the remains of calcining (roasting) kilns. Ironstone was tipped into these kilns and burned to drive off impurities and reduce weight. ( and hence the cost of onward transport). The complex also included coal depots, cottages for railway workers and an engine shed.
Bank Top- the birth of Rosedale's Ironworks, 160 years ago, this peaceful spot was a hive of industrial activity. Ironstone mining in Rosedale began at Hollins Mines around 1856 and Bank Top itself was a centre for the transport and processing of Ironestone.
