I took a photograph of a homeless man tonight.

Being a photographer, it is easy to take photos of beautiful buildings, bridges and landmarks.

It's difficult to capture the true story of the city you live in.

The last 12 months roaming Newcastle looking for that "perfect shot" I have become to understand the true struggles of some that live within.

The estimated number of rough sleepers in England rose by 169% between 2010 and 2017. Sleeping rough shortens life span by 30 years, with people likely to die younger at 47, compared with 77 for the general population.

Those on the streets are still people, with personalities and dreams.

It's understandable that you could be uncomfortable in approaching or speaking to those in such circumstances but that does not mean you cannot help.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through advice, support and legal services.
