This was taken in North Wales at the Welsh Mountain Zoo! This was after hours and the tigers were feeling a lot more confident with the lack of people!Time
I was at the zoo from 5pm till about 8pm on a summer evening last year.Lighting
The lighting at the zoo isn’t fantastic in the evening due to where the sun sits behind the trees. This particular photo is a little darker than my more recent edits of it, but I felt the darker versions are smoother and offer a more finished quality compared to the more noisy lighter edits!Equipment
This one will put my memory to the test! I use a canon 7d and and Canon 650d depending on what I’m shooting, going from memory I believe it was the canon 7d with a 18-200mm Sigma lens.Inspiration
I just love big cats, I’ve always been fascinated with the similarities between big cats and domestic cats. Apart from the size their temperament and traits are so similar! I think behind the teeth and powerful bite they have a real soft side, and when this tiger came to the fence and just sat their looking at me and stone camera, you could of thought that he just wanted a fuss!Editing
Shooting in RAW tends to cause a slight quality loss compared to JOEG, and realistically you’ll never get the same quality from RAW. But! With RAW you have a lot more options in the way of tidying and finishing a photo. So I always do some form of post production with my photography. Higher contrasts and defined shadows and highlights certainly rly add more pop to a photo.In my camera bag
I tend to carry everything and anything I need. Whether it been lens cleaning kits, spare cards or extra lenses, I tend to get whatever I can fit in it. Most days I fill a 90 litre bag with all my gear, a stove, a pan, a matter, and everything I need to stay dry and make a good brew and some food.Feedback
Patience is everything, in this particular instance luck was definitely a factor. For instance, I was there at the right time, I’d been waiting for hours, and after being there a while the tigers became curious, and this one just came over and sat with me. He was close enough to get a really clear picture, but far enough that I could focus through the fencing! Learn some calls that’ll make them curious, if you were a Tiger and someone spent an hour taking photos of you, it would only be a matter of time before you went to see what they were up to!
