Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a remote, off trail area, above Lakes of the Clouds, near Westcliffe, Colorado

Time

I took this shot in the late afternoon, early evening, when the sun had moved behind the mountain but was still lighting the valley and clouds.

Lighting

Late afternoon indirect sun

Equipment

Believe it or not, this was taken with a cell phone... the Samsung Galaxy 9

Inspiration

I was on a solo backpacking trip and had climbed to an area near this spot to setup camp. After making camp, as is typical for me, I made supper. This was my view while I was waiting for it to rehydrate. The wind had finally died down below making for perfect reflections of the clouds. The beauty was amazing and I snapped this shot as a memory.

Editing

Basic lighting and color adjustments in Lightroom but honestly, not much was needed.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I carry a true camera with me so I can capture high quality images of the scenes I find myself in. As a full time nomad, hiker, and backpacker, I put myself in places like this quite often... usually I'm carrying my Sony a6000 on a Peak Design shoulder strap clip on my pack. In my pack I bring some basic lens cleaning gear (wipes, pocket rocket, etc...), a few filters, a telescoping lens, and an ultra wide angle lens. I still carry my S9 too but generally don't take many photos with it anymore.

Feedback

Get out as often as you can and ALWAYS carry a camera you can operate quickly and easily. The more time you spend in amazing areas like this, the more likely you are to snap that epic landscape shot, but only if you have your camera!
