Thanks for all the congrats for making finalist in this category. I'm tickled pink. This was inspired by my granddaughter. I was watching her play and I grabbed my camera laid down on the floor and began an impromptu photo shoot.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo playing with my granddaughter on the bed with plenty of blankets for coziness.

Time

It was a summer evening in a basement bedroom.

Lighting

There was light coming in through a south facing window. I experimented using the flash and ruled it out. Note: I hate using flash. I prefer always to have natural light. Exception, when indoor lighting is sufficient for photos without using flash. This evening I had sunlight coming through a small window and table lamp on. I had also to move into just the right position to capture subject with just the right amount of light.

Equipment

Equipment used was a Canon EOS Rebel T3I. My lens is a 18-55mm. It was handheld.

Inspiration

This is one of my all time favorite inspirational photos. My granddaughter was playing with her new toys in our bedroom while babysitting her. She had a complete story for the figures. They were in love, going on a picnic, getting married, and finally, lived happily ever after. Watching and listening to this 5 year old play using her imagination fascinated me. I try to keep my camera close most of the time. This instance I had run upstairs to grab it. Hoping that I wasn't too late to catch the action I plopped down and lied on the blankets with her and began shooting her and the toys. With this particular photo she did the basic pose of putting them in car with the girl driving because "girls are better than boys", granddaughter. LOL! I did fine tune the poses. I enjoyed this impromptu photo shoot. I love getting inspiration from all the little things all around us everyday.

Editing

No post-processing.

In my camera bag

I have only one camera, one lens, batteries, chargers, tripod (large and small), cleaning cloth and extra media cards. I like to travel as light as possible.

Feedback

Simply pay attention to the small things, the special moments shared with your loved ones. I started this photo shoot on a whim. Expecting to capture that true bliss of a child at play I got down on her level and became involved with her story. I took many photos of my granddaughter and all the characters and other toys. Although my granddaughter's face did not make the final cut it was her toys and her story that I believe are the winners. Remember you may have one specific goal or vision when photographing a subject but keeping your mind open can result in a great something unexpected.
