Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken in Adamstown, Cardiff city center. This beautiful architectural church caught my eye. The sharpness of the roof against the contrast of the sky. It stood out from all other buildings.

Time

I was driving home after a long day in the city. Being early October the weather was cool but the sun still strong. I took this photo around 5pm.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important factors to capturing the best photos. Lucky for me the natural lighting was enough for this photograph.

Equipment

This shot was taken on my iPhone 8, f/1.8 1/453 3.99mm ISO20. It was a spur of the moment capture and no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This church has caught my eye several times but the weather and contrast between building and sky was perfect on this day. The beauty in the architecture was probably the most inspiring focus for me.

Editing

The only processing I did was to change this photo from colour to black and white. Even though the colour version is lovely, changing it to b&w just added the feel I was looking for.

In my camera bag

At the moment I only photograph with my iPhone which is always with me. I have always got my case which includes, phone charger, tripod, telescope (mini 12x Zoom) 0.62x Wide Angle lens, 20x Macro lens, 235°Fisheye lens, Starburst Lens, CPL lens, and Lens attachment/phone holder. On occasion I also take my photography lens balls, and I chuckle to myself at the thought of someone trying to attack me etc and a swing of my bag with these balls in tow would likely knock someone out :-)

Feedback

Architectural photography is very dependant on mood and lighting and therefore the weather plays a big role in this. Plan ahead, check the weather forecast. Time of day is important also, this was a busy time with lots of people walking around. Which I don’t mind at all sometimes but if you wanted it to be quieter then a different time of day would be essential. Also research what you want to photograph and see if it has been done before, see what angles you prefer etc and good luck to all photographers capturing memories :)
