Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the parrot court at the Hamilton Zoo, New Zealand.

Time

An early morning walk (from 9.30am) around the Hamilton Zoo often provides the best results as the large crowds don't arrive till later, the animals are happier to pose it seems.

Lighting

Shooting through glass can often be a hit and miss depending on where the sun is in the sky. Sometimes it's waiting for the right opportunity, sometimes it's waiting for a cloudy morning. This was one such cloudy morning, where the sun was only just peeking out at hitting right where the parrot was sitting.

Equipment

My trusty Canon 70d with a Tamron 75mm to 300mm Lens.

Inspiration

The lighting of the subject at the time was just too good to pass up.

Editing

Only post processing was just to lower the shadows a little more to completely darken the enclosure at the back creating the portrait look.

In my camera bag

Along with my camera if i'm heading to the zoo, I always make sure my 75mm to 300mm lens is attached, but will have at least one other lens in my bag for different shots should the opportunity arrive. If i'm shooting landscapes, particularly waterfalls, my tripod and UD filters are a must to allow for slower shutter speeds.

Feedback

Plan you trip if going to a zoo, earlier in the morning or an hour or so before closing is the quietest time to go, but also usually provides the best lighting for shooting through glass as the sun is not to high in the sky causing reflections of the glass. To get eve more of a darkened background shot, underexpose your shot by 2-3 stops if the subject you want to capture is particularly bright.
