It is the landmark for the town of Schwerin and even more for the whole of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Until about 100 years ago it has been the ducal residence of the Grandduke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Today it is still the center of power in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, because it is the seat of parliament.
