Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo back when I was in college. I used to live two floors below the ground level so when I was climbing the stairs I looked up and saw this bicycle and decided to click it.

Time

It was in the evening around 5:30 PM IST. We were going to our canteen for evening snacks.

Lighting

Since I wanted the cycle to be the primary focus of the picture, I made sure that there were no other distraction in the image. A clear sky was in the background that provided the uniformity to the upper half and lower half was dark brick wall that provided a great contrast and also highlighted the outline of the cycle.

Equipment

I usually carry my canon camera but since I was going for having snacks in my college and didn't expect anything worth capturing on the way I just had to take out my phone for this moment and shoot it. It was Mi A2 at the time.

Inspiration

Sometimes staying in college can get really tiring. Since mine was a compulsory residential college, I was staying away from my family and studying law. If staying alone wasn't stressful enough, studying law was very tenuous and hard to keep up with. Sometimes all I wanted to do was run away. When I saw this cycle just parked there, I felt like it was just waiting for me to climb it and run away. The minimalism of this photo also shows that I had no other thought but just to ride this to a far away land.

Editing

I did a little bit of post processing in this photo. I reduced the saturation to minimum so as to create the the black and white effect. I also increased the contrast so as to create the clear difference between the light and dark area. That also made the outlines of bicycle more clear.

In my camera bag

I generally carry my Canon 1500D and 18-55mm lens for closer images. For distant objects I rely on my 55-250 mm. I am really depended on my latter lens. I love the feeling of saying something in distance and being able to capture it clearly and without disturbing it's surrounding and because I don't do any extreme nature/wildlife photography or astronomical photography, these lens work absolutely fine for my daily photography.

Feedback

My response to this question will be to always be on lookout for moments that invoke a certain emotion, memory or desire in you. The photo need not be very special but if your meaning or story behind the photo is something important to you, you can push others to see the value of it. We are always living such fast lives and even when our lives slowed down due to Covid, it didn't get any easier. In tiring times like this, such simple photos and our memories associated with them are what keeping us going. So instead of trying to go too far away from our home let's open our hearts and minds and rethink our surroundings in a different light. Thank you.
