If you’re travelling on State Highway 1 between Picton and Blenheim, New Zealand, you’ll see skeletons of dead willows standing stark in a swamp area. The Para Wetland is currently the subject of a major restoration project to remove to remove willows (planted years ago in the mistaken belief that they would stop this area flooding) and restore the natural habitat of flax, raupo and lowland forest. I just love the contrast of the contorted shapes of the dead willows with the vibrant new growth of the native species.
