Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photograph at the Horseshoe Bend in Page, Arizona.

Time

The shot was taken early morning, around sunrise on a cloudy day.

Lighting

The day was cloudy, so that created a giant reflector/diffuser for sunlight, giving a nice uniform light. So you see all the details of textures and crevices on the rough terrain. On a day with clear sky, the dynamic range would have been too high for the details to be captured without an HDR.

Equipment

Canon t2i camera, and Canon 10-22 lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

I had gone to shoot the sunrise. But the clouds did not let too much color in the sky. As the day broke, most folks walked away, disappointed that there was no grand sunrise. I saw the texture on the terrain and decided to take a few shots utilizing the cloudy day diffused. Am glad I took the chance.

Editing

Yes. I use lightroom for post processing and usually play around with the sliders till I get things the way I like, and yet... look natural.

In my camera bag

A canon camera body, a wide angle lens, a telephoto lens, a remote trigger, GND and ND filters and polarizing filters on all lenses

Feedback

Try an go either on a cloudy day or before dawn/after dusk. This place is open to sky. So during day time on a sunny day, there would be too many shadows and highlights for anyone to be able to capture the details on the terrain. If you can get some color in the sky, even better.
