Behind The Lens

Location

We were on one of our evening walks along the Darebin Creek near home when we noticed the Kookaburra in a nearby tree. He/she was staring intently at the ground waiting for prey to show themselves so ignored us.

Time

It was late in the afternoon with the last hour of sun lighting up the area.

Lighting

The late sunlight added intensity to the plumage, particularly the browns and blue in the wing. I love how the rest of the scene has warm tones that for me bring a sense of the summer season in which the photo was taken.

Equipment

I use a Olympus Omd em 1 mark 2 with the f4 300mm pro (600mm full frame equivalent) hand held.

Inspiration

It part of the routine of our walks. I always carry my camera and since the area we walk-in has lots of bird life I have the 300mm attached as well. When we noticed the Kookaburra it didn’t seemed to fussed by our presence so after a couple of grab shots we moved in closer to try and frame the bird in the scene properly..

Editing

Post processing was simple and restricted to white/black sliders, contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

Along with my Olympus Omd em1 mark 2 and f4 300mm pro lens I have a 60mm Marco, f2.8 7-14mm, f2.8 12-40mm and a f2.8 40-150mm Olympus lens as well as a flash. I carry what is appropriate for the time and what sort of photography I think I might be doing.

Feedback

Go for a walk and while you are out and about observe the environment you are in. Soon you will start to see pattens in bird behaviour and you will be able to predict where they might be and land. Patience is a requirement as is have your equipment ready to hand and exposure/ shutter preset so when a opportunity presents you can ‘grap’ the shot.
