Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was serendipitous, I was setting my studio up for another pet portrait and Austyne wandered in to the set with his toy and sat down , the camera was there so I took a few shots and then he got up and walked off , I did photograph him a lot and I guess he was the one deciding he wanted his photo taken . I'm glad I did as he passed away earlier this year

Time

It was 2pm in the day , the curtains were open , and he had sat down in front of the camera in my studio on the couch , the natural light highlighted the shape of his face and shoulders , he was just ethereal

Lighting

As this was a completely unprepared and not prearranged , I used the natural light from the window and took the shot , it turned out Beautiful

Equipment

Natural light, Nikon D800 Nikon 50mm lens on a tripod , that's it

Inspiration

Because he insisted and wouldn't move until I took some of him, and he was advancing in years , these images let him live on in everyone's eyes , not just mine , a recorded moment in time , as Bresson would say it was the decisive moment

Editing

I literally used NiX software and put it in film noir setting and that was it

In my camera bag

D800, tripod, polariser, 28/50 and 18-200mm zoom the other two are manual primes , and a flashgun

Feedback

Using natural light on a black dog has a much more pleasing aesthetic than studio lighting , I shot against a black couch too , just to be different , I wanted the focus to be on his face and those eyes
