This young girl is from the Gambian village of Jufureh, a tourist destination thanks to the TV series 'Roots'. Author Alex Hailey's 7th generation ancestor, the Mandinka warrior Kunta Kinte, had lived here before he was captured into slavery. Children here are taught to beg from infancy; they sing and dance for donations to fund their schools. A local policemen accompanies each tour group to prevent excessive harassment to the visitors. Our group found the visit an uncomfortable experience, as most of the children did not look genuinely happy.
