Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Theewaterskloofdam, Western Cape, South Africa, during the long drought. A dust storm in the background is aproximately 50 to 60 metres high at the far end of the dam. Animals and birds traveled far to get to water.

Time

I was there to do a photoshoot of my daughter's engagement. I walked round looking for a good view to use as backdrop when I saw the dust storm starting. All images was taken with a Canon EOS 70D witha 18-55mm and a 75 -300 EF Lens. The late afternoon sun reflects into the dust storm. The clouds helped to darken and the birds was beautifully lit on their wings.

Lighting

The setting sun left the mountainside dark in shadow and the dust storm was lightened in the last sun rays to make it stand out against the mountain.

Equipment

A Canon EOS 70D with a 18-55mm and a 75 -300 EF Lens.

Inspiration

I was looking for something special and nature provided a dust storm to make it just that. The plain backdrop of the mountain behind the dam did not make it alone.

Editing

I used NIK to enhance and bring out the detail in the dust storm, and cropped it into HD by cutting out some of the foreground.

In my camera bag

A Canon EOS 70D with a 18-55mm and a 75 -300 EF Lens. A Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro and a Canon 50mm f1.8 STM. A sturdy Manfrotto Tripod.

Feedback

Look for something other than the usual. A point of interest is of importance. Remember the basics, focus, lighting and always remember the depth of field.
