Perhaps, one of the best cases I've seen in a while were the saying "looking at life through rose tinted glasses" is apt.
These huge lurking beasts, quite rightly now have World Heritage Site status and should you find yourself in the Netherlands, then the village of Kinderdijk with it's nineteen Windmills is a must. Dusk and dawn vistas are stunning and it would be easy to envisage a life by the water there as nothing other than idyllic. The reality of working and living in these low lying lands in the 18th Century was quite the opposite though. Life was exceptionally harsh, difficult and dangerous with accidental death in the "work place" not uncommon.
This image was shot just after the sun had set with the scene lit by the last remnants of it's light. Although I did pack my camera on purpose for this trip to Kinderdijk, I do question myself on the merits of photographing such blatantly obvious "targets" when time is limited. After learning about the daily lives of it's historical inhabitants and the lives of one family in particular I just wanted to capture these beautiful beasts in the best way I could, at night.
