Behind The Lens

Location

On an early morning walk round Marine Bay in Weston-super-Mare. I turned back and looked towards the buildings behind the bay and saw some beautiful morning colours rising behind the buildings. I just had to snatch this one!

Time

It was about 6am in the morning, just as the sun was starting to rise.

Lighting

As this was early morning, I wanted to find a morning sunrise scene but was caught unexpectedly with the brilliance of red colouring from the rising sun. Just subtle enough with the soft morning low light, to capture a great reflection.

Equipment

I only used my beginner’s Nikon D3300 DSLR and 18-55mm kit lens. A free hand shot.

Inspiration

I love colour and reflections and I was inspired by the redness of the rising sun contrasting with the soft lilac tones across the water.

Editing

Yes I pulled some detail from the shadows on the buildings as I exposed for the sunlight, and cropped the image to improve the balance.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my Nikon D3300, kit lens, extra 200mm zoom lens, a few density filters and a small tripod, for when there is a need for sharpness. Although I prefer free hand to feel a little more creative.

Feedback

It’s simple. Reflections need water and light. Find a spot that’s the right side of both!
