After a long day of work, I captured a self portrait after hanging out in a little nook of bamboo. I have never been able to fake smile which is a problem in work environments but great in analyzing things about myself that I may have not thought about.

This was during the evening on a summers day. It was awfully humid and generally not the most pleasant mood but nature always has its way to cheer one up.Lighting
I was sweating a lot due to the humidity and the evening light is a wonder reflection of this and the eyes. It was also pleasant to the human eye. Everything is just a little more alive but happily and in a calm way.Equipment
A Nikon d3400, while not necessarily labeled for professional photographers it is cheap and has gotten me where I needed to go. There was no tripod just me extend ring my hand layering the bamboo between my face.Inspiration
I had been overwhelmed. I often go for runs, hikes or walks and when I can I’ll pack my camera. I do these to decompress. Due to past trauma as most people have I have found these as outlets and seem to look more closely at the photos I’m taking and the reactions/ facial expressions I may be feeling. In the photo I had just broken up from a 4 year relationship and moving back to an unhealthy environment where I would easily find myself in a negative state. Here was one of the walks I had gone on and decided to entangle myself in the bamboo thicket.Editing
I do! I actually love the post processing work. Black and white was how I went about this photo because I wanted people to see the photos exhaustion on the skin without needing an obvious indicator as color would be. I wanted to see the texture of my skin compared to the smoothness of the bamboo which is a invasive species and not commonly found in Virginia. I made the found have more clarity and contrast to fully bring out these features.In my camera bag
Usually I have a wide angle lens, a portrait lens and an adjustable. I often don’t carry tripods as I like to get creative with my environment and it’s difficult to lug the thing around.Feedback
Learn about yourself. Learn about what bothers you and what doesn’t. When you don’t feel like taking photos take a photo of yourself. When it won’t even occur to you to take one try to change your thought process to action in a positive way. Art allows us not only to express ourselves but to learn about ourselves and learn about others. People aren’t always able to express how they feel in words.
