Towanroath engine house Wheal Coates sits above the Atlantic Ocean on the north Cornwall coast surrounded by heather and gorse.
Mining records for this area date to 1692, but Wheal Coates mine wasn't begun until 1815. The engine house was built in 1872 when Wheal Coates reopened after a long period of inactivity but sadly closed again in 1914 when the seam proved to be unprofitable.
