The last moments of peace before a monster thunderstorm descended upon the city, seemingly without warning (the radar scans made it seem as though it were all skirting south, SOUTH damnit) - sending thousands upon thousands of people who'd gathered to watch the fireworks into an intense, frenzied run for cover.

The scene was very apocalyptic, in its own way, but I didn't have the time or the means to take shots of it. As it is, my partner's camera died a heroic death getting soaked, even in his camera bag, in the torrential downpour.

As we hustled back toward the Loop, we retraced our steps across Lake Shore Drive and toward Millennium Park. Just as we passed Maggie Daley Park, the world became white, bleached to nothingness by a sudden, powerful strobe of white behind us. Instantaneous was the crack, hiss, and oppressive boom of thunder, louder than I, a child brought up in the Midwest, had ever heard before. Everyone in the massive crowd screamed, ducked, ran ever more determinedly toward whatever shelter they could find.

Turns out, a woman was struck by that bolt and survived the hit.

It was an interesting 4th of July to say the least.

Chicago, IL. July 2018.
