Found at Kern River Parkway in Bakersfield, California on August 25, 2018. According to Audubon.org, this small heron lives along quiet streams or shaded riverbanks and is solitary at most seasons. When in the open, it raises and lowers its crest nervously. I witnessed this. It was quite impressive, but I didn't get close enough for a clear shot of it with the raised crest. I do have a shot of it from a distance.
