Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Hawaii on the Island of Oahu.

Time

Early in the morning as I was preparing my backpack to journey out to some of my favorite trails and beaches to see what wildlife I could capture. I decided to go out to the back of my house to see if I could capture some photos of the flock of wild parrots that would come by in the morning to stop off at a tree with berries in a wooded area behind my house. I was all in place underneath a tree against a privacy wall with my camera all ready for anything that would land or just fly the tree around 80 to 120 yards away. I was relaxing just enjoying the incredible morning waiting on the unmistakable loud sound of the wild parrots. The java sparrow (a very common bird in Hawaii) landed on the wall 15 feet in front of me. I moved as slowly as possible adjusting my focal point and settings on the camera. After getting a couple shots the Java bird took flight and I forgot all about the parrots seeing the Java bird made me remember I had not had my second cup of java.

Lighting

Early morning

Equipment

My go to camera is a Canon 5D Mark IV with my 100 to 400 canon lens which really surprised me when I was able to get the shot of the Java bird which was really close to my location.

Inspiration

I tend to go nowhere without my camera

Editing

I always keep my post-processing to bare minimum mainly because I want my photos to reflect what I saw that day. Some fine tuning and cropping was all that was done in editing. My goal in all my wildlife/landscaping photos is by staring at the photo the image will slowly take you to that point in time.

In my camera bag

So that I am not second guessing myself, I keep my equipment to my base, one lens, second battery and card and some cleaning equipment. I am typically on the move so the less is better.
