Behind The Lens
Location
It was taken in Decatur, IL. A couple days before this shot I noticed humming birds coming regularly to the feeders we had and took a couple pics. They weren't the greatest so I set out to take better hummingbird pics as a challenge for myself as birds were a new subject for me.Time
This picture was taken in the late afternoon after a day of taking school pictures. I perched on the steps of the front porch since it was about time for them to begin flying back and forth between our neighbor and our feeders. I remember I was about to lose the light I needed and got chewed up by mosquitos but sat just a few more minutes to get this shot.Lighting
I was running out of light for the shutter speed I wanted to use. I liked this one better than the middle of the day shots because of the differnce in color.Equipment
Shot handheld with a Canon 50D and 28-135mm Canon lens. No other equipt.Inspiration
Humming birds are a bit challenging of a subject and I wanted to see how good of a shot I could get. They are so fast that a person doesn't get a good look at em without pictures.Editing
I did just a tiny bit of processing in my phone with a free photoshop app to increase contrast and lighten it up a bit.In my camera bag
Besides a spare battery and cards I like to have my 70-200mm Canon lens unless it's on my camera, in which case my trusty kit lens is in there. I also like to have my cheapy 15mm 1:1 macro along too. My speedlight usually also lives in my bag just in case.Feedback
When photographing critters a lil patience can pay off along with knowing your camera and the habits of the critters you plan to photograph.
