Before European colonisation of Australia, Barney Springs was the traditional territory of the Aboriginal Yidinji people, and it is thought that the Springs formed a meeting place for contact between various tribal groups. In 1882 during European settlement in this area, Barney Heyes gave his name to the springs when he settled close by near Rocky Creek Crossing.

During World War 2, a military hospital was constructed at Rocky Creek, and a
million gallons per day of clean spring water was pumped from Barney Springs to supply the hospital facility.
