This is an Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola). The adults average weight is between 545 and 2,205 lbs. It looks like a big fish head with fins. They love to eat jellies. The female can produce around 300 million eggs at a time. They putter around at about 2 mph and can dive up to 2,000 ft. I see three fish hooks just on the one side exposed to me. Poor guy. This photo was taken while whale watching out of Moss Landing CA. 2018-08-15

The first time I saw one of these in the wild we were on a cruise ship in the Med. It appeared like a shark was just a few yards away from the ship because this fish's dorsal fin was gliding along just out of the water as a shark fin would. The longer I watched it, the more I questioned it being a shark and finally I saw its body. Crazy looking fish but remarkable. I love that you included so much about it! Great capture!

It was sooo close I didn't even get the top of its dorsal fin. It is the largest Sunfish I have ever seen.

I was diving off carmel and had one swim by me. I though it was a shark with the fin out of the water. I think they are still filtering the water there..LOL
