Behind The Lens
Location
The setting for this photo was in a derelict former office/factory on a small run down industrial estate, part of which is used as a photographic studio. The room and window were in their abandoned condition with plaster falling off the walls and the windows covered in dirt and grime. The room was deliberately chosen for this shot as with its natural light it provided a striking contrast with the beauty and elegance of the model.Time
This shot was taken about midday. The weather outside was bright and sunny with the light pouring through the windowLighting
The idea of creating a contrasting image between the dilapidated setting of the shot and the flawless elegance of the model was most appealing. The bright outside light was softened by the condition of the dirty window, shedding a soft diffused light across the model. The light level was measured with my Sekonic 308 light meter and the camera settings adjusted accordingly.Equipment
My camera is the Canon 5DS along with my favourite lens -the Canon EF 24-70 F 2.8 L 11 USM. Always shooting in RAW the image was taken at F4 with 1/125 shutter speed and an ISO of 100 .The camera was hand held with me leaning against the wall for additional support.Inspiration
This image was part of a four hour shoot working with the model across the various studio sets. Creating images with Ivory Flame , the model, is always an inspiration in itself. As an outstanding international model, Ivory Flame is one of the UK’s most sought after photographic models. With her creative dress sense and inspirational poses the success of a shoot is assured as the poses seamlessly flow from click to click.Editing
Being a Canon man I invariably use the latest version of Canon’s DPP for any post processing. Over many years I have found Canon’s programme meets most of my post processing requirements. The original image was cropped for compositional balance and the colour tone of the model’s’ hair and fabric strengthened slightly .In my camera bag
Most of my work is studio based and this is reflected in the equipment in my bag. I have my two camera bodies , Canon 5DS and the 5D Mk IV. My lens are the EF 24-70,F 2.8 L11usm ; 24=105 F4 L S11 usm ; EF 85mm F 1.8 usm; EF 50mm F1.4 ; EF 16-35 F 2.88 l 11 usm . I also have my flash, Speedlite 600 EX Rt and Sekonic 308 meter and of course, spare card and batteries.Feedback
The three key elements in the photograph are the model, the setting and the lighting. Checking the light levels using the meter and the camera’s own histogram as a guide I have found to be useful tools.
