Location
Captured this photo of the corona and the “diamond ring” created as the moon passed in front of the sun on Aug. 21, 2017, near Greenville, SC.Time
It reached totality mid-afternoon.Lighting
Total blackness dominated the sky at the moon moved across the face of the sun and on a day when it was near 100, the temperature immediately dropped into the 70s.Equipment
Image taken wi5 a tripod mounted NikonD5000 with a Nikon 80-300 zoom.Inspiration
When I was a child, my father drove us from Charlotte, NC to Lumberton near the coast to watch the only other total solar eclipse I have witnessed. I always wanted to see one in person and when the opportunity presented itself I made sure I was able to shoot it. We also watched it through my Celestron telescope attached to my computer with my digital eyepiece.Editing
Minimal work in PhotoShop to get the deepest black and whitest whites, just as it appeared in the sky.In my camera bag
Nikon D5000, a Nikon 28-80 f2.8 lens and a Nikon 80-300 f2.8 zoom. Nikon flash.Feedback
Make sure you have proper viewing glasses and of course do not look directly into the sun. To get this image, I actually took a shot every few minutes from bright sun then moving toward totality and then continued until sun was completely visible again. So, I have a record of whole eclipse and then the single shot of the “diamond ring.”
