Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Mangochi, that's a lake District in Malawi, Africa. We spent the day shooting from location to another, this was from the last location we had picked, travelled a long distance to get to, we shot these by a river called Shire(pronounced 'sheere')

Time

We had started shooting from 9am, this picture was taken around 4pm in the late afternoon.

Lighting

I used nothing but natural light in this shoot ,I love natural light and it's challenges. It was getting close to golden hour(by this time I had no idea there was 'golden hour'). The sunlight was particularly beautiful and soft on this day despite Mangochi being a hot place with harsh sunlight.

Equipment

I shot this shot using a Canon 550D and a 50mm f1.8 lens.

Inspiration

There was no particular inspiration to create this particular image or any of the pictures from the shoot but the intention to have pictures for the portfolio of my first model. Turned out better than I had ever hoped for, still one of the best pictures in my portfolio.

Editing

Yes, I did all the post processing in Adobe Lightroom. I was heavy on the Tone Curve tool and I added some blue in the highlights with the Split Tone tool after putting the saturation and vibrance on zero.

In my camera bag

It's usually my Nikon D610 which I named 'Mikeilah' and my 50mm f1.4. The 50mm is by far my favourite prime lens.

Feedback

If you plan to shoot with natural light I would advise you have a large or sizable reflector,a 5 in 1 reflector so you can get some fill light on your subjects face and also diffuse the harsh light, as you just can't dial down the sun's power as you do on a speedlight or strobe light.
