With their spiny fins and bony skull protrusions, Pacific staghorn sculpins are difficult for an egret to swallow. After plucking the fish from the mouth of a tidal sluice, this Great Egret spent about 2 minutes repeatedly tossing the fish to reorient it, then swallowed it once the sculpin was facing straight down its esophagus.
