This was one shot from a series of images I took with my friend on a Dublin beach at sunset. The water was freezing but she toughed it out so I could get some shots. This being one of the best. I lay down on the shoreline to be almost on the same level as my subject. I was worth getting a little bit wet to be able to capture the shot I wanted!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a section of the beach in Malahide beach, county Dublin , Ireland.

Time

I took the photo just after sunset on a July Summers evening just at the beginning of Golden hour.

Lighting

It was a beautiful summer evening which made for some lovely shots on the beach. This was one of the last shots of the day. The sun had just set and there was gorgeous golden hour light. It was like being in Spain and not Dublin.

Equipment

The shot was taken handheld as I lay down on the shore and shot on my canon 5D Mk 4 with a tamron 70- 200 lens.

Inspiration

Myself and the model,Claire discussed what kind of shots we could do prior to the shooting day. She had so many great ideas that was very inspirational and helped towards the final shots. The original idea for the water shot was for e be to shoot from a height looking down on the model but on the day it was decided that it might be cool to get the shot on the same level as the subject. I ended up getting a little wet myself but it was worth it!

Editing

I did do some post processing on the image. A little bit of cropping and playing around with the colors, saturation, vibrance and a little clarity. There was no major edits such as skin smoothing etc.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon 5Dmk 4 body, canon 24-70mm f4, Tamron 70-200mm 2.8, canon 50mm 1.8 and a couple of speedlites and triggers.

Feedback

Scout out your location and make sure its safe to shoot. You cannot be too careful when it comes to water. Shoot at sunset or during golden hour as the light can be magical and be prepared to get wet as if you want to get the shot you need to be prepared to lay down on wet sand as the water comes at you. You end up a little soggy but it's worth it to get the shot you want. Needless to say lots of towels and a change of clothes is a must. Take a fools advice. A 90 minute drive home in damp clothes is no fun, but in the end its worth it.
