Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Issaqueena Falls in South Carolina. It was rainy and muddy and a rather precarious scramble down to the bottom of the falls, and even harder to get back up, but was totally worth it for this shot.

Time

I took this shot fairly early in the morning. I like to hike to and shoot waterfalls early so as to avoid the potential for people coming into the frame.

Lighting

It was super cloudy this morning and so I didn’t even need my ND filter for this shot. It actually started raining right about the time I captured this image, and quickly packed up and left before the trail back up got too slippery to climb.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D750 and the kit lens that cane with. I always use a tripod for these shots. I did not yet have a shutter remote, so I had set the timer to give me the one to back off the camera and for any vibrations to settle before the shot was taken.

Inspiration

Waterfalls and therapeutic to me. I love their power and beauty and they soothe me. This one did just that. I shoot waterfalls almost exclusively

Editing

I simply adjusted a bit of lighting, boosted the contrast and vibrance just a bit in Lightroom. I try to take photos that don’t require much more than some basic adjustments as I’m woefully inexperienced in Photoshop!

In my camera bag

I always have my kit lens, as well as my 14mm wide angle lens. I also always keep a polarizer, variable ND filter, and a gradient ND filter with me. When I bought my 14mm, I bought the filter harness and 100x100 ND filter for that as well. My wireless remote is also absolutely essential for my long exposure work.

Feedback

PRACTICE! Play with your settings, pay attention to the exposure scale in camera, and never stop experimenting! You never know what shot will end up just blowing your mind, and it could be one you got from trying something new! Think outside the box!
