Kverkfjöll is a sub-glacial mountain range on the northern side of the Vatnajökull glacier. The mountains here are volcanically active, they cover an enormous magma chamber, the heat of which has led to glacial melting and thus the creation of ice caves. One of Iceland's most active high-temperature geothermal areas is located in the western Kverkfjöll Mountains.The mountains are divided into eastern and western halves by Kverk, a wide pass cutting through steep, rocky walls, Kverkjökull glacier flows.
