I took this abstract image of Piha in my own home. Years ago I had taken a photo of Lion Rock at twilight, and printed it onto an A2 canvas. To take this shot, I placed that canvas on the ground and high above it positioned a glass dish which I filled with some water and oil. By adding some dish-washing liquid, the hard edges of the oil thickened to form rings with depth. To create the ring within a ring effect seen in the top circle, I broke the oil bubble up using a skewer, guided an already formed bubble inside, and quickly closed the gap again. I waited until the smaller bubbles on the left of the top ring emulated the shape of Lion Rock behind it before taking the photo. I wanted people to instantly recognise this iconic Auckland landmark, but then pause to wonder what the image actually was and how it could have been made. My intention was to re-create Lion Rock, even as doing so was recreational for me - something that brought immense enjoyment, relaxation and fulfillment to me.
