Behind The Lens

Location

Cell Block 9 at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Time

Shot was taken inside the building at 2pm.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural. Because of the state of the building there are large walls missing as well as holes in the ceiling. I believe I got lucky with the lighting in this shot.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel T5, without flash. I don't know what settings I used because I'm still very much an amateur.

Inspiration

I saw this cell, liked in and noticed how the sunlight naturally focused on the object against the wall at the back of the room. In the foreground you can see a pair of prison pants strewn on the floor. It's almost as if I could feel the loneliness and despair in this photo.

Editing

Some post editing on my computer that included some heavy vignette, increased the concentration and enhanced the color.

In my camera bag

Normally, I would have a wide angle lens, a basic zoom lens and a macro lens with additional macro attachments. This day however I only used my camera and the the EF 18-55mm lens with auto focus and image stabilizer.

Feedback

Not sure about advice, but I know as I walked through I wasn't expecting to get such beautiful shots as this one. It took slow walking, and really paying attention to the small things that you normally wouldn't expect to stand out.
