Behind The Lens

Location

I took this longhorn photo at a unique ranch here in Oregon. In an attempt to draw more attention to Oregon farmers and ranchers and their importance in our communities, I was invited to Four Springs Ranch to take photos of some of the animals that are not normally seen in our area. There were 6 longhorns in all and we went right out into the field with them on razors to get up close and personal. They were much larger than I could have imagined and was quite scary at times but very worthwhile.

Time

This shot was taken in the evening hours at twilight. It was also a perfectly overcast and partly cloudy evening.

Lighting

I took a lot of shots this day trying to get that perfect lighting and background. The geofence, greenery and overcast evening made this one of my favorites!

Equipment

I have only started photography about a year ago and still use my first camera. A Nikon d3200 I used this camera and a wide angle lens to be sure I got all of the horns. I had to get this quickly because as you can see he was headed right for us. I used no other equpment.

Inspiration

I have been working on a project to call attention and o Oregon farms and ranchers. I am attempting to show the importance of farming and how beautiful it can be.

Editing

I did do some minor post processing for this photo, I cropped this just a tad and I used Lightroom to give it a little punch and bring down lighting in the background. I enhanced detail slightly on the longhorns head and horns.

In my camera bag

I usually travel with at the very least my basics, my 50 ml, wide angle and a couple Of zoom lenses, and a speed light or two. Since I am still an amateur I am working on building my “stash”.

Feedback

I think my advice would be to just try and make sure the lighting is ight for the shot you want. I don’t do studio work so outdoor lighting is important for me. Keep working and keep clicking. I probably take way too many shots to get that good one, for for me right now that’s ok, because I love this new adventure.
