Begun in 1847 and completed in 1850, Montgomery County's original courthouse stands at the corner of Third and Main in downtown Dayton, Ohio. New York architect Howard Daniels modeled it directly on the Temple of Hephaestus, an Athens landmark from the 5th Century BCE. On September 17, 1859 Abraham Lincoln gave a speech at the top of the limestone steps. Just one year away from his election to the presidency, he stopped in Dayton on a speaking tour and delivered one of his legendary arguments against slavery--eloquent monologues made famous in the Lincoln-Douglas debates.
