Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard standing in my lilac bush, holding my phone in one hand and a bouquet in my other.

Time

I look this photo myself at 2:20pm May 13th, 2018!

Lighting

I love sunset lighting but this lilac bush is in the shade at sunset. So I took this photo in the afternoon but should have taken it later. I found in many photos from this shoot there were harsh shadows and highlights that I think is too much of a distraction. This one one of the photos that did not have any across my face so I was lucky!

Equipment

For this shot I used my Nikon D750 with a 50mm 1.4 lens, tripod and my phone as a remote.

Inspiration

Lilacs are one of my favourite flowers and spring is the best season! I wait all year for them to bloom so I can enjoy and capture their beauty in my portraits!

Editing

Yes! I started in photoshop smoothing and retouching the eyes, enhancing the colour of the lilacs and brightening the eyes a touch. I then adjusted the curves, tweaked a few things and added a purple fill colour to add the lilac colour throughout the photo and lighten up the shadows.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Nikon D750, 50mm 1.4 lens and either my 18-35 3.4 or 70-300 4.5. Depending on what photos I'm taking or how long my trip is I have my tripod, charged phone, ND filter, extra battery & SD card, rain cover and any clothing or extras I want in my portraits.

Feedback

One of my favourite techniques is having greenery or flowers in the foreground. It makes it look like you are deep in the flowers or beautiful meadow. It can even work in more landscape shots, makes it look like you are in a super lush forest shooting through the branches.
