Behind The Lens

Location

In the Adelaide hills

Time

Just before sunset on a warm spring day

Lighting

I hadn't gone out intending the take a picture of horses. But as I drove past and saw them standing there with the golden light coming in behind them, I couldn't resist. The photo was backlit, so I had to use my flash. There was a risk it would spook the horses. But as it turns out, they didn't mind at all.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk iii, 70-200mm f2.8 lens, flash

Inspiration

For me the most important part of photography is working with beautiful light...when I saw the horses and the light, I knew I had to take a photo. As luck would have it, I had my equipment with me.

Editing

Yes, I shot this in RAW and edited it for shadows, contrast, colours etc.

In my camera bag

Canon 5d mk iii 28-75mm f2.8 50mm f1.8 70-200mm f2.8 90mm macro f2.8 Flash ND filters Spare batteries Wireless remote shutter Lens cloth for cleaning smudges I think thats it...but I'm sure there's more

Feedback

Have an open mind...when you see something beautiful, trust your instincts and stop to take a picture. Be bold and brave, not safe. Anyone can snap a nice picture on f8, but it takes skill to get a photo at f2.8 with the subjects in perfect focus. Take a risk because the end result will have more wow factor.
