The Santa Apolónia Station, in Lisbon, was inaugurated on May 1, 1865, during the reign of D. Luís I. Over more than 150 years, millions of passengers passed through the area and there were important historical moments.
It is one of the oldest train stations in the country and was the point of passage for millions of emigrants who came and went to France or Germany in the 1960s and 1970s in search of a better life. This image has become so iconic that next to the building was built a monument to remember those years.
Inside the station you can also see a plaque that recalls another important moment in the country's history: The arrival of the city of Porto, General Humberto Delgado. In 1958, during the presidential election campaign, the "General Without Fear" was received in apotheosis in Oporto and, upon his return to Lisbon, was expected by thousands of people. Surrounding the crowd were also police forces who tried to end the demonstration.
Santa Apolónia lost its importance after the inauguration of the Oriente station, but hundreds of thousands of people continue to pass there every year.
