Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken IMW Duxford's Air festival 2018. For me, this was the first airshow of the season. Where I, would try out different ideas.

Time

This was taken sometime in the afternoon, as the B-17 taxis out ready for her display slot.

Lighting

It was a very sunny day in May, so I tried for the first time a variable ND filter to get full circle from the props.

Equipment

This was taken on a Nikon D90, a focal length of 55mm at f/10 at 1/40 sec ISO 200. Handheld. With a variable ND filter resting on the fence.

Inspiration

As this airshow is early in the season, I will try new ideas I pick up over the winter months. I was also looking for a full circle from the props. So the idea was to see what results from the variable ND filter would be.

Editing

This has been processed in Photoshop because it was underexposed, plus it has converted to HDR by Photomatix Pro, as monochrome.

In my camera bag

For an airshow where would be two Nikon camera bodies, plus one 150-500mm telephone lens and a 70 - 300mm and 18-105mm lens for ground display,s plus a selection of different filters.

Feedback

The variable ND filter was dificult to use, it the time it takes the aircraft to taxi pass, so it became better to use a two or three-stop ND filter. Monopod or tripod instead of the fence, because crows are pushing against the fence.
