Behind The Lens

Location

This image is actually my house. I live across from a park, and decided one night to try and capture images of the trees, lit only by streetlights. Those shots were pretty much a bust, but as I turned to walk back to the house this was the sight that greeted me - my cat (Leeloo) perched in one of his favourite spots, and perfectly lit!

Time

This was shot around 11pm at night.

Lighting

This image is all about the light! Basically the only light sources were the inside light pretty much directly over the cat, and a street light just casting over the house itself.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750, 60mm macro lens, handheld.

Inspiration

This was the only shot I got on a failed evening of shooting! I had planned to be shooting something else entirely, when I turned around and shot this. At first, I laughed out loud when I saw it, realizing this is what my house (and cat) look like to passers-by most evenings.

Editing

There was little post processing needed. I cropped the image slightly, to remove lights on the right side, and tweaked the exposure to bring out just a little detail on the house.

In my camera bag

I mostly work with a Nikon D750, and a variety of lenses - but my go to always seems to be my 60mm macro. It isn't technically the best lens I have, but it's one I love dearly for it's flexibility!

Feedback

Keep your eyes open, and try to look for a different angle or perspective on common subjects! Also, don't give up on a shoot until the very last shot - in this case, I shot probably 70 images that night and this was the only one I loved!
