Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the Fort Worth Zoo, located in Fort Worth, Texas, on a hot summer day!

Time

I just got a new camera and was very excited about making a trip to the beautiful Fort Worth Zoo to try it out. This photo was taken around 10:00 a.m. when the zoo first opened. It took me several tries to get a shot of this little guy with his eyes open. I remember thinking that he must have just had his morning meal and was very sleepy. Fortunately he stayed awake long enough for me to catch him with his eyes fully open.

Lighting

Natural light on a very bright summer day. Thankfully this little owl was at the entrance to his burrow which cast a little shadow on him.

Equipment

Hand held Nikon D750 with a 50mm lens - my new baby!

Inspiration

I went to the zoo with the purpose of photographing an owl! I've tried several times to locate and photograph the owls in my neighborhood nature center but have always failed. When I got my new camera I knew a trip to the zoo was in order. I made my way to this little owl and got the shot while he was standing at the entrance to his burrow.

Editing

When I took the shot I had not noticed the two, dead, white mice that were laying in the sand behind the owl. When I zoomed in at home there they were! Ugh! I removed them so viewers could concentrate on the beauty of the owl and not his next meal. Other than that I did no other post-processing.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, Nikon D3300, nifty 50 lens and a stock zoom lens. I'm hoping one day to have what I call the ultimate birding lens! I'd appreciate any advice on what lens that might be!
