Manu-o-ku or White Tern (Gigis alba)was designated the official bird of the City and County of Honolulu as a threatened species that embodies the fragile nature of Hawaii’s unique environment, One of the most unique things about Manu-o-Kū is that they don’t actually build a nest but lay their egg directly onto a tree branch. Honolulu is the only city in the United States where Manu-o-Kū nest. The birds spend the day hunting at sea as far as 120 miles from their roost, before returning home to inner city Honolulu in the afternoon.
