I took this photo in a friends gym. It had huge roll up doors so we would have plenty of light and ventilation.Time
Since we were inside we actually did this session in the middle of the day. It was an overcast so with the huge doors open it made the perfect lighting for it.Lighting
We only used natural light. Since we had such great natural light it made it perfect and no need to add any additional. We at about a 45 degree angle from the doors. And in far enough that there was no harsh lighting.Equipment
This was shot on a D3400 Nikon with a Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 18-200MM 1.35-56G II ED. No tripod or flash was usedInspiration
The inspiration for this shoot was a group of dancers i have worked with before that was looking for something different and not the typical dance shot. So I started looking for something we could do. I found several chalk sessions and they loved the idea. So I did lots of research on the best way to about a shoot like this. Even went as far as trying to make our own chalk. (Complete fail) but then I found several articles that suggested corn starch. Well that much was out of our budget so we tried flour and it turned out amazing. We was able to get a ton for super cheap and it gave the desired effect.Editing
Post processing mainly consisted of copy and pasting more flour so it was a little thicker and smoothing/darkening the background since there was flour all over it from other poses.In my camera bag
I carry 2 camera bodies a D300s which is normally my go to and D3400 which was used in this session. 2 Nikon 70-300mm one AF-P one AF. Because the AF-P does not focus with my D300s. My go to lense is the 1Nikon AF-18-200mm. And I also carry nikon kit lense AF-P 18-55Feedback
If youd like to try something similar. I suggest having a HUGE backdrop as for some of them I had to add more to get the desired look. Make sure have very well ventilated area. Flour worked amazingly for the desired effect and was so much cheaper then chalk or corn starch. You can always change the color from white in post processing. Make sure it is very well lit. I would suggest wide appature and high shutter speed. Its definitely worth giving it a try for a different shoot. It was so much fun. Also if doing indoors vacuum up the dust. Anything wet will just make a HUGE mess and then it will harden like concrete and be a nightmare to get up. Have you model bring a change of clothes and suggest they use a leaf blower or blow dryer to get as much of the flour out before washing. Also a good idea to blow out their hair with the leaf lower or blow dryer before washing. The leaf blower does work better but a blow dryer is sufficient. It does have a high clean up but so worth the result.
