Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Davidson's Flat along the Deschutes River. It is one of the camps along the multi-day section of the river.

Time

I was sitting at camp watching the sun set.

Lighting

I had been rowing down the river all day and usually pretty tired, so it is a ritual to sit and watch the sun set to end the day. I took a few photos and this was the light I liked.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3300, no tripod, no anything, but sitting there with the camera and snapping pics.

Inspiration

As I had mentioned before, I am a whitewater boater and as an oarswoman, we typically are tired once we get to a camp for the day, but I always look forward to watching a glorious day end with the sun leaving the canyon. This sunset was nothing spectacular, but with the rafts in the foreground to the left and the sun in the upper right, the light on the rafts caught my eye as I was sitting there, so composed the pic accordingly.

Editing

I believe I sharpened it a little and maybe enhanced the little bit of yellow in the sky. This photo was taken a few years ago, so I don't exactly remember and I had a different post processing app than I use now.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I have a Sony A7ii as my back issues have made me lighten my load. I upgraded the standard lens to add a little more distance and occasionally use my neutral density filter since I now live in the SW. I have a remote, card and extra battery. Depends if I am traveling to unique landscapes and can drive or have my husband with, I will pack my Nikon D610 and prime lens with a tripod.

Feedback

Look to where the sun will set, plan your composition ahead of time, but also be willing to move. Lastly take lots of photos and watch how the light changes to capture that great pic.
