Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Liberty Wildlife rehabilitation center in Phoenix, Arizona where I volunteer.

Time

This was taken late morning inside the classroom.

Lighting

Lighting is a combination of natural lighting flooding through the floor to ceiling windows and some overhead fluorescent lighting

Equipment

iPhone 8+ portrait setting

Inspiration

I am absolutely fascinated by the intricaciy of their facial disk feathers. It’s like looking at snow flakes. Barn owls in particular have the ability to arrange their facial feathers to help direct sound to their ears or away from their ears as needed

Editing

I did crop in a little bit tighter post process.

In my camera bag

iPhone, GoPro hero, lens attachment for iPhone with tripod.

Feedback

This is not a shot that would be easy to capture in the wild. The advantage of shooting at a rehab center is the ability to get up close and personal with wildlife, without special lenses. Many wildlife rehabilitation facilities have an education arm which admits the public, usually for a nominal fee or donation. Those fees help feed and rehabilitate the wildlife in that area. Conservation is imperative to human survival.
