Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in a Retreat Centre in a Hill Station.

Time

Initially I kept watching this White cheeked Barbet for about 40 minutes. I have seen both male and female flying up and down carrying the feed in the nest alternatively. As I carry my camera most of the time i just thought of trying to capture the moment. Its only over two and a half year since i started bird watching, i am a beginner , learning photography using online tutorials. I make sure bird are not disturbed and their behaviour is not distracted when i attempt taking picture. I was watching the behaviour of this Barbet alone for about 90 minutes, yet didn't know how the time flew.

Lighting

It was a hill station with lots of trees. This particular place the it wasn't dense not sunny either, still the Sun flares were just around exactly the nest which actually made it difficult yet I kept changing my position, got lucky finallly.

Equipment

I use Sony A6000 - Mirrorless camera. I used Sigma 70-300 Sony A mount lens using Sony LEA adapter as My camera is E mount. I didn't use Flash as the light was good enough.

Inspiration

It was very interesting as to how i came across this lovely White Cheeked Barbet. Morning i set out for birding with my camera walking through the woods. Suddenly i heard the sound as if somebody was driving nail through the wood using hammer. I was bit disturbed that this would disturb the birds too. I turned around to see where the sound comes from. To my surprise and excitement i found this Barbet pecking the tree so hard that it sounded hammering. Following 90 minutes was spent around the bird.

Editing

I did some processing using Lightroom, yet couldn't and didn't have to do much as the texture of the tree and the feather of Barbet Camouflaged pretty much. I just had to crop and increase clarity to minimal.

In my camera bag

I carry my Sony A6000 almost all the time. Though i dream to possess 150-600 i cant afford. if God willing in the future. As i do more birding I carry 70-300 macro lens. The advantage is that i do birding at the same time macro of insects, reptiles, flowers etc. I also carry 16/28 wide angle, 16-55/F3.5 kit lens in my kit as love to capture landscape if and when i come across. Very seldom i carry monopod. I prefer to take pictures with camera handheld. I also use neweer flash if in case i need them for my portraits. I have two batteries and two 64GB memory cards and two card readers and two memory card adapters just to make sure that my photography doesn't stop abruptly.

Feedback

Patience is Rewarding. I have learnt that it's important to take good pictures in the first place itself. I always tell myself that i am not going to post process pictures, which binds me to take good pictures. I realised late that softwares will only enhance my picture but not my skills so i work hard to improve my skill. Photography is the only thing in the world that freezes not only the moment but also TIME. My ability to thank God for the beautiful world, people and creatures around me is increased only after i started photography. Thanks Viewbug for providing such an avenue to showcase out work.
